Introducing the R-E Like Looks

The R-E Like Looks have just been released! These are specially curated Creative Looks that were developed to resemble the desirable Arri “Look”, with muted contrast and softer highlights. The beauty of these looks is in their simplicity and flexibility – they can be used with footage across multiple Cameras and Color Profiles, whether with S-Log3, V-Log, Cineon Log and other Log profiles or even Rec.709 and Rec.2020!

The R-E Like Looks are available in two different formats: a Look-Up-Table (LUT) Pack for all applications and a Power-Grade version specifically for DaVinci Resolve.

The LUT Pack contains 6 unique looks – R-E Like 1 to R-E Like 6 – with subtle differences across them. For each Look, the LUT Pack contains a standard Rec.709 version, a Rec.2020 version and a Log to Rec.709 version.

The Rec.709 and Rec.2020 versions are meant for sources that have already been normalized to either a Rec.709 or a Rec.2020 timeline. The Log version is a Cineon Log input source which converts to a Rec.709 output with tone mapping for highlight preservation. This allows the Log version to be used on footage recorded with S-Log3 or V-Log gammas.

R-E Like 1 look vs V-Log footage in a non-Color-Managed workflow

R-E Like 1 – 3 each have a different look whilst still aligning to the Arri Look. R-E Like 4 – 6 are slightly darkened iterations of R-E Like 1 – 3 respectively and have comparatively darker shadows whilst maintaining the same highlights.

The R-E Like Power-Grade pack offers two additional Looks on top of the 6 already highlighted – these are DaVinci Resolve specific looks due to the nature of the Power-Grade. The R-E Like 7 look offers Highlight Recovery for use-cases where required whilst the R-E Like 8 look is tailored specifically for HDR workflows where maximum Highlight preservation is required for High Dynamic Range delivery.

The Power-Grade can be used across multiple workflows, be that with ACES or a Resolve Color Managed workflow. To allow for greater flexibility across the varying workflows, the Power-Grade relies on the Colorist to perform any required scene normalization, whether before or after applying the Power-Grade.

The main advantage of a Power-Grade is the flexibility to modify parameters in order to suit preferences. With this in mind, all Power-Grades have been clearly labelled within the Node structure to ensure the end-user has visibility of all steps in the color-grading process.
